Following the adoption of the
Exclusive Economic Zone by Thailand and neighboring
counties, the Royal Thai Navy needed to enhance its
capabilities to conduct more extensive operation at sea
and effectively protect national interests. Apart from
procuring more ship, the Royal Thai Navy also sought to
develop self-sufficiency though developing shipbuilding
skills, raging frim conducting research and trials to
achieving the design and building of a ship prototype
for its own construction. The Royal Thai Navy sent 16
officers to Chaina for two year training at the
Shipbuilding Research and Development Center, and 17
officers for training in the construction of frigates
from start to finish at Hudong, Chaina |

During 1991-1995 the Royal Thai
Navy procured six frigates from Chaina. HTMS
Chaophraya, HTMS Bangpakong, HTMS Kraburi
and HTMS Saiburi. HTMS Naresuan, and HTMS Taksin.
The ship were built in Chaina and fitted with Chainese
weapon systems, however, the main engines and power
generators were from Europe. HTMS Chaophraya,
HTMS Bangpakong, HTMS Kraburi and HTMS
Saiburi have a displacement of 1,924 tons each and armed
with c-801 surface-to-surface guide missiles. HTMS
Naresuan, and HTMS Taksin have a displacement of
2,980 tons and fitted with U.S. and European weapon
and combat systems. Their main weapon system comprises
Harpoon surface-to-surface missiles. |

After that These were On 1 January
1992, the Ministry of Defense approved the
reorganization of the structure of the Royal Thai Navy.
Categorizing ships by their type into 9 squadrons, from
former 4 squadrons, the 2nd Frigate
Squadron was since established. In April 1992,
the People’s Republic of China delivered 4 newly built
frigates of the Chaophraya Class to the Royal
Thai Navy. They were HTMS Chaophraya, HTMS
Bangpakong, HTMS Kraburi and HTMS Saiburi.
All of them were commissioned under the command of the 2nd
Frigate Squadron with HTMS Chaophraya as the first to
arrive to Thailand.
On 26 December 1992, His
Majesty King
Bhumibol Adulyadej benevolently
assigned His Royal Highness
Crown Prince Maha
Vajiralongkorn as the head of the
anointing ceremony for the 4 frigates. Thus the 2nd
Frigate Squadron has taken that auspicious day as it’s
establish day ever since.
