In the Service of His Majesty the King

Even to the present, Thai monarchy has remained the highest and most revered institution since the inception of Thai society. King have ruled and served as the highest Commander of the armed forces, looked after the welfare of the people and defended the sovereignty of the land. Throughout each move from city states to Siam and to Thailand, the monarchy worked assiduously in protecting territory and resources to ensure security, unity and to bring about modernization to the country.

Throughout its long history, the Thai monarchy also played a dominant role in the development of the navy. As the King led naval forces into battle, he advised and directed the construction of new warships for more effective warfare. Modernization of the navy, as in all other forces, was also achieved by top-down mandates from the King and members of the Royal family who dedicated themselves to upgrading and gradually westernizing the fleet. The present site of the Royal Thai Navy Headquarters was granted land rights by the King Rama V for construction of the Naval Academy, Royal Thai Navy. Phrachulachomklao Fort was built by Royal command and Sattahip Naval Base was also constructed on land bequeathed by King Rama VI. In the past, funds from the Privy Purse were also diverted to buy warships to strengthen the fleet.

One of the duties of the armed forces, apart from defence of territory is to safeguard the monarchy and the Royal Family. The Royal Thai Navy was granted permission to establish a special division in the Naval Academy to serve as the Royal Guards under the name of Cadet Division, Royal Guards, Naval Academy, Royal Thai Navy in 1978. In 1990, the name of changed to Naval Cadet Regiment, Royal Guards, Naval Academy, Royal Thai Navy. The King also granted permission for 3rd infantry Regiment, and 9th Infantry Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment, Royal Thai Marine Corps to become part of the Royal Guards on 10 September 1980.

At present, the Royal Thai Navy serves the monarchy and the Royal Family in several capacities; some in official or ceremonial duties such as serving as the Royal Guards or organizing the royal barge procession, some in special projects such as Royal Initiative projects and some in commemorative projects on special royal occasions. A brief introduction of the range and diversity of the Royal Thai Navy's work in the service of His Majesty the King will be presented here.

Official and Ceremonial Duties, Transport and Security for His Majesty

Since days of old, one of the navy's duties has been to prepare transport for His Majesty and the Royal Family when they wish to travel by river, sea or visit coastal areas. King Rama V's visit to Europe in 1907 was on the Royal Yacht Maha Chakri (1) and King Rama IX visit to the Sattahip Bay in 1968 was on HTMS Chanthara, Subsequent visits in the Gulf of Siam were also on HTMS Chanthara and HTMS Mae Klong.
Another active duty is the provision of personal security and protection for His Majesty during his travels all over Thailand and especially when the Royal Family take up residence in various palaces in other provinces. In addition, special security forces at sea would be organised for palaces located near shorelines such as Klai Kangwol Palace, Prachaub Kirikhan Province or Daksin Palace in Narathiwat Province.

Disaster Relief

Whenever the Kingdom faces natural disasters, such as drought, flood or extreme cold weather, the Royal Thai Navy sets up a disaster relief center near the area to provide water, food, medical supplies and at times, emergency shelter for those affected. In cold weather, blankets and clothings are distributed. The assistance is provide though navy funding as well as donations from the public.
